The salts flats of Uyuni are one of the 25 wonders of the world and are not to miss if you are in Bolivia. It was used as a marker for astronauts in space. It is actually 12 000 km2 of salt at a 3650 meters altitude. It was used to be a prehistoric salt lake that used to cover most of the south-east of Bolivia. It has been calculated that the reserve of salt is of 10 thousand millions of tons of salts.
In the “Isla de Pescadores”, which is located in the center of the flats, you can find interesting groups of cactuses and some animals, such as flamingos.
The town of Uyuni is situated at the south-east of flats. At the north-east, you can find the Salar de Coipasa, an exeptional village of the Chipaya indians. It is possible that these villagers would be the descendants of the extinguised Tiahuanacu civilization. It is preferable not to take any pirctures of the natives of this region.
Laguna Colorada
It’s a red lake, situated in the extreme south-est of Bolivia. A rare kind of flamingos lives in this lake. The temperature can go as low as -20 °C. 50 km away south from the lake lays a 4800 meter high “Sol de Manana”, where a geiser relieses its sulfuric fumes in the air.
Laguna Verde
This beautiful green lake is located at an altitud of 5000 meters, at approximately 100 km from the “Sol de Manana”. Behind the lake, you can find the volcano Licancabur, which holds at the top an Inca crypt.
